IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR WOMEN'S OFFICIALS!!!!  We Need Offiicials!!!!
January 17, 2003

The Following information was supplied by Connie Walton, Midwest Local Board Chair.

Greetings to all Women’s Lacrosse Umpires of the Midwest Local Board!

You are part of US Lacrosse, Inc. and the Women’s Division Officials Council that is the governing body for Women’s Lacrosse Umpires. The Midwest Local Board is part of the Great Lakes Region (Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin) which is one of 4 regions that make up what is now referred to as Super Region V.

For the 2003 lacrosse season, the Local, Region, and Super Region Chairs are as follows:

Super Region V Chair – Laurette Payette

Great Lakes Region Chair – Lissa Fickert 12.oh.us

Midwest Local Board Chair – Connie Walton wa

uNow that we have "chairs" in place, our next step is to fill the various officers’ positions (secretary, treasurer, ratings chair, or vice chair) for our Super Region, Region, and Local Boards. If you are interested in serving in one of these positions, please contact Laurette, Lissa, or me.

UMPIRE REQUIREMENTS

All umpires MUST complete 5 tasks---

    1. Attend a "scheduled" Rules Interpretation Meeting (see "Rules Meetings" section below)
    2. Pay Dues (see "Dues" section below)
    3. Complete a US Lacrosse, Inc. Membership Form (see "Membership" section below)
    4. Pass a Written Test (see "Written Test" section below)
    5. Pass a Practical Test (see "Practical Test" section below) when rating expires

RULES INTERPRETATION MEETINGS

(Page Down for meeting and training dates!)

All umpires are REQUIRED to attend a Rules Interpretation Meeting that is given by a District or National rated

Umpire who attended the annual National Umpire Convention. There are meetings "scheduled" throughout the Midwest that may be attended by any umpire in the Midwest. Check the listing contained herein.

If an umpire does not attend one of the "scheduled" meetings he/she is EXPECTED to attend a "make-up" meeting for which the Rules Interpreter will charge a minimum of $50. Please do not rely on a "make-up" meeting.

DUES

Dues must be paid to US Lacrosse and to our Midwest Local Board annually. Both US Lacrosse and Midwest dues go towards recruiting and training officials, sending members to the National Lacrosse Convention each year to bring back information to share with Board members, and general operation (phone calls, printing, postage, etc.). New officials receive a slight financial "break" their first year because of the other "start up" expenses (shirts, shoes, jacket, etc.) they must incur as first year officials.

Dues must be paid prior to taking the Written Test and Practical Test.

Dues for Returning Umpires: ($85 Total)

$50 US Lacrosse dues – See "Membership" below

$35 Midwest dues – To be paid at the Rules Interpretation Meeting

Dues for New Umpires: ($55 Total)

$50 US Lacrosse dues – See "Membership" below

$5 Midwest dues – To be paid at the Rules Interpretation Meeting

MEMBERSHIP

Returning Umpires – 3 options for "renewing" your membership.

I. Complete the form that was sent to you in December. Send this form and a $50 check to US Lacrosse.

II. Renew on-line

1. Go to www.lacrosse.org

  1. Follow the directions to renew your membership (you will need your membership # located on your membership card or the label of the Lacrosse magazine).
  2. Pay your $50 annual dues with a credit card on-line.

III. Get the form on-line and return via mail.

  1. Go to www.lacrosse.org
  2. Follow the directions to renew your membership
  3. Print the membership form
  4. Send completed membership form and check for $50 (made out to US Lacrosse) to US Lacrosse office (the address is on the inside cover of the rulebook)

Again, at the Rules Interpretation Meeting plan on paying Midwest Board dues ($35) (checks made payable to "Midwest Women’s Lacrosse Association").

New Umpires – How to become a member---Read Below.

New officials, unlike return officials, must become members to US Lacrosse through the Midwest Lacrosse Board only --- you will be unable to become a member as an official of the women’s game directly through US Lacrosse (all new officials across the country must go through the Local Boards). Your new officials’ trainer will help you through this process. You will then pay your $5 Midwest membership dues at the rules interpretation meeting.

WRITTEN TEST

The Written Test should be taken after the "Rules Interpretation Meeting". Each year each umpire who has previously had a rating must pass the Written Test at the level of his/her current rating or, in the event of failure, must re-take (and pass) the written test or pass a "Practical Test" that year. Passing scores are as follows:

Apprentice Rating = 80%

Local Rating = 86%

District Rating = 90%

National Rating = 92%

New officials take the "apprentice" test. All other officials take the "regular" test (unless otherwise determined by your rules meeting interpreter).

PRACTICAL TEST

Make plans to attend one of the opportunities listed herein for your "Practical Test". If you must renew or upgrade your rating (Apprentice or Local) contact Lissa Fickert (Dayton/Cincy), Linda Strapp (Columbus), or Connie Walton (Cleveland/Toledo). If you must renew your rating (District) or want to upgrade your local rating to District contact Lissa Fickert. If you choose to renew your rating via the "Written Assessment Checklist" (WAC) follow the instructions in your manual. Renewal by WAC is available to Local, District, National rated umpires and may not be used for consecutive renewals.

That’s all for now! Make plans to attend a Rules Interpretation Meeting and to renew your rating if needed. If you know of anyone interested in learning how to become a lacrosse official, contact Lissa, Linda, or me.

Sincerely,

Connie Walton – Midwest Board Chair
