Columbus Tops Cincinnati 11-10 To Win MCLC

Big Third Quarter Key For Columbus,

Cincy Comeback Falls Short

A big third quarter that had Columbus outscoring Cincinnati 7-2, made the difference and brought the Midwest Cities Lacrosse Clubs Championship trophy to Columbus.

Rance Stilphin(Moeller) and Eric Clapp (Moeller) staked the Queen City team to a 2-0 lead early, but Columbus goals by Rob Offenberger (Denison) and Matt McSweeney (Butler) tied the score at 2-2 at the end of the first period.  Canadian National Team member and former Butler All American Darcy Sweet put Columbus in front 3-2 early in the second period.  Cincinnati's Sean Eldridge (Rochester Institute of Technology) scored twice to put Cincinnati back in front.  When Columbus' Steve Gloeckner (OSU)

and Cincinnati's Tad George (Moeller), Mariemont Head Coach, trade goals, the boys from the river held at 5-4 half time lead.  Cincinnati goalie Jeff Bolyard (Notre Dame) had nine first have saves.

Gloeckner found the net just 1:46 into the second half and Sweet added his second score for a 6-5 Columbus lead.  Former Delphi stand out Ken King scored the first of this three goals at 8:13 in the third to tie the score at 6. But Columbus went on a 4-0 run on goals by Doug McKearns, Matt Lee (OSU), McSweeny, and Greg Zytkowski (OSU) to push the lead to 10-6. Eldridge scored this third and Offenberger his second on an assist from Gloeckner and it was 11-7 Columbus at the end of three quarters.

King got his second goal and Dan Fisher (OSU) scored for Cincinnati and King's third goal with 1:24 to play brought Cincinnati to within one at 11-10.  Cincy controlled the face off, but  three great saves by Columbus goalie Matt Schwabower (OSU) in the last twenty seconds denied the Cincinnati Orange the tie and made Columbus the champs.  "Swabie" had 17 saves for the game.

In other MCLC action Cleveland defeated Lakeshore (Chicago) 7-6 to capture third place. It was Lincoln Park (Chicago) 9 and Chicago 5 for 5th and 6th place, while Twin Cities defeated Motor City 15-4 in the final consolation game.
